Our client, a mission-driven and well-established nonprofit organization in Chicago, is seeking a strategic, forward-thinking Chief Financial Officer (CFO) to join its executive leadership team. This is a unique opportunity to modernize and lead the financial operations of a respected institution while contributing to its long-term sustainability and impact.
About the Role:
The CFO will serve as a key advisor to the CEO, executive team, and Board of Directors. This is a highly strategic role, with day-to-day accounting managed by the Director of Accounting and Staff Accountant. The CFO will lead forecasting, financial planning, risk management, and process improvement initiatives while helping guide the organization through a period of infrastructure transformation and evolving labor considerations.
Key Responsibilities:
Lead the organization’s financial strategy, forecasting, and annual budgeting
Partner with executive leadership and the Board on financial planning and decision-making
Oversee variance reporting, revenue and labor forecasting, and union-related financial modeling
Manage risk assessment and mitigation strategies, along with treasury and cash management
Modernize financial systems, reporting processes, and internal controls
Supervise a four-person finance and accounting team, promoting growth and collaboration
Serve as the financial lead during union integration and infrastructure updates
Ensure compliance with nonprofit financial regulations and audit requirements
Qualifications:
10+ years in senior nonprofit financial leadership roles (CFO, VP of Finance, etc.)
Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, or a related field; CPA strongly preferred, MBA a plus
Deep understanding of nonprofit finance, grant management, and 501(c)(3) compliance
Strong strategic and analytical skills, with a proven track record of driving change
Effective communicator and collaborator with board-level experience
