Assistant Controller

Location: New Haven County, Onsite
Compensation: $120,000-$140,000

About the Role

This is a hands-on Assistant Controller position supporting the Controller and CFO in overseeing day-to-day accounting operations and ensuring accurate, compliant financial reporting.

You’ll play a key role in the monthly close, audit, reporting, and healthcare-specific financial processes, while also acting as a backup across core accounting functions when needed.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support the monthly close process, including preparation of operating statements and board reporting
  • Assist with Medicare & Medicaid cost reports, including follow-ups and resubmissions
  • Partner on the annual audit, coordinating with external auditors and internal teams
  • Support preparation of financial reports, UDS schedules, and Form 990 support schedules
  • Maintain fixed assets and depreciation schedules, including monthly entries
  • Perform monthly cost allocations across departments and programs
  • Manage prepaid and accrued expense reconciliations
  • Analyze and report on billing write-offs
  • Support cash management activities, including deposits and upload files
  • Assist with American Express activity uploads and supporting documentation
  • Serve as a backup across AP, AR, payroll, and grants functions as needed
  • Participate in special projects and ongoing process improvements

What We’re Looking For

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting (required)
  • 5+ years of progressive accounting experience in a senior-level role
  • Healthcare accounting experience is required
  • Experience within nonprofit environments strongly preferred
  • Strong Excel skills and overall systems proficiency
  • Experience with MIP or similar nonprofit accounting systems is a plus
  • Strong attention to detail with the ability to operate both strategically and hands-on
  • Comfortable working cross-functionally and partnering with leadership
