Senior Accountant – Nonprofit Organization

Position Overview: The Senior Accountant plays a critical role in ensuring the financial health and compliance of the organization, with a primary focus on grant reporting, grant audits, and budgeting. This position manages complex grant requirements, prepares accurate financial reports for funders, supports internal and external audit processes, and contributes to organizational budgeting and forecasting.

This role is ideal for someone who is detailoriented, analytical, and passionate about using financial expertise to support missiondriven work.

Salary: $70,000 – $85,000

Key Responsibilities

  • Prepare timely and accurate grant financial reports for federal, state, local, and private funders
  • Monitor grant budgets, spending, and compliance with funding requirements
  • Maintain detailed grant files, documentation, and auditready records
  • Coordinate and support grant audits, including gathering documentation, preparing schedules, and responding to auditor inquiries
  • Work closely with program managers to track grant expenditures and ensure alignment with program goals
  • Assist with the development of the annual organizational budget and grantspecific budgets
  • Prepare monthly financial statements, reconciliations, and variance analyses
  • Support the annual external audit and 990 preparation

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required
  • 7-10 years of accounting experience; nonprofit or grant accounting experience strongly preferred
  • Strong understanding of GAAP and fund accounting principles
  • Experience with grant reporting, grant compliance, and audit preparation
  • Proficiency with accounting software and Excel
  • Exceptional attention to detail and organizational skills
  • Strong communication skills and ability to work collaboratively across departments

Preferred Traits

  • Experience with federal grants (e.g., HUD, HHS, DOJ, SAMHSA)
  • Ability to translate financial information for nonfinancial staff
  • A proactive, solutionsoriented mindset
