You post the role. You wait. Resumes come in, but none of them are quite right. So, you repost and wait again.
If this sounds familiar, you’re not alone. While today’s hiring market plays a role, it is often not the only issue. In many cases, the disconnect between an open position and qualified applicants comes down to a few common, fixable mistakes that are easy to overlook when you are already juggling a full workload.
Here’s what we consistently see getting in the way.
1. The job description is leading with requirements, not opportunity
Top candidates are paying close attention to how opportunities are presented. They scan job postings quickly, and if the first thing they see is a long list of required qualifications before they understand what the role actually offers, many will move on.
The strongest postings lead with the opportunity: what this person will own, what problems they will solve, and what growth looks like. Requirements matter, but they should not overshadow the value of the role.
2. Compensation isn’t transparent or competitive
Qualified candidates are researching employers before they apply. If a salary range is not listed, many assume it may be below market and move on. If the range is not aligned with current market rates, you may be filtering out the very people you are trying to attract.
Compensation transparency is becoming a bigger part of the hiring conversation. It also gives candidates the information they need to apply with confidence and move through the hiring process more efficiently.
3. The process is moving too slowly
Strong candidates in accounting, finance, human resources, and technology are rarely on the market for long. If your hiring process stretches over several weeks, includes too many interview rounds, or leaves candidates waiting for updates, there is a good chance your top choices will accept another offer first.
A streamlined approach shows candidates that your organization values their time, communicates clearly, and is ready to move forward.
4. The role is scoped for an ideal candidate who may not exist
Sometimes the problem is not the candidate pipeline. It is the way the role is defined. Positions that combine too many responsibilities or require an unusually specific mix of skills and experience can dramatically shrink the pool of qualified candidates. It is worth asking whether the role is designed to attract the best available talent or simply reflects an internal wish list.
5. Your employer brand isn’t telling your story
Candidates are evaluating your company before you ever speak with them. Your LinkedIn presence, employee reviews, website, and overall brand all influence whether they see your organization as a place worth pursuing. If that story is outdated or unclear, strong candidates may move on before they even apply.
What’s working right now
Organizations that are successfully filling mid- to senior-level roles in a competitive market tend to be intentional about how they attract, engage, and move candidates through the process. They are often the ones that:
- Write job postings that emphasize impact, opportunity, and career growth instead of leading with a long list of requirements.
- Move candidates through the hiring process quickly and communicate clearly at every stage.
- Set compensation expectations early, so there are fewer surprises later in the process.
- Partner with a staffing firm that already has established relationships with qualified professionals.
That last point is more important than many employers realize. Some of the strongest candidates are not actively applying to job boards. They are having conversations with recruiters they already know and trust, which means access to the right talent often starts long before a role is posted.
