HR Generalist

Position Overview

We are seeking an experienced HR Generalist to join our team in Hammond, Indiana. This role is ideal for an HR professional who has a strong background working in a union environment and excels at employee relations, communication, and building trust across an organization.

The HR Generalist will serve as a key connection between employees, leadership, and union representatives. The ideal candidate will be comfortable navigating employee relations issues, collaborating with union leadership, supporting retention initiatives, and helping create a positive and productive workplace culture.

Key Responsibilities

  • Serve as a trusted HR resource for employees, supervisors, managers, and leadership.

  • Build and maintain strong working relationships with union leaders and representatives.

  • Partner with union leadership and management to address employee concerns, workplace issues, and contract-related matters.

  • Manage and resolve employee relations issues, ensuring concerns are addressed fairly, consistently, and professionally.

  • Help bridge the gap between employees and leadership by facilitating open communication and building trust.

  • Support employee retention and engagement initiatives designed to improve morale and reduce turnover.

  • Coach managers and supervisors on employee relations, performance management, policies, and workplace issues.

  • Assist with investigations, disciplinary actions, grievances, and conflict resolution.

  • Ensure consistent application of company policies and procedures across the workforce.

  • Support recruiting, onboarding, employee development, and other general HR functions.

  • Maintain accurate and confidential employee records and HR documentation.

  • Partner with leadership on workforce planning, organizational development, and continuous improvement initiatives.

  • Help identify trends in employee feedback and turnover and develop strategies to address them.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or a related field preferred.

  • 4+ years of progressive HR Generalist experience.

  • Prior union/collective bargaining environment experience is required.

  • Strong understanding of employee relations, conflict resolution, and performance management.

  • Proven ability to collaborate effectively with union representatives and leadership.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to establish credibility and trust with employees at all levels.

  • Experience supporting employee retention and engagement initiatives.

  • Ability to handle sensitive employee issues with professionalism, discretion, and sound judgment.

  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to remain calm and objective in challenging situations.

  • Highly organized with excellent follow-through and attention to detail.

  • Ability to work effectively in a fully onsite, fast-paced environment.
