Our nonprofit client is seeking an experienced Controller to oversee the organization’s accounting and financial operations. This is a hands-on leadership role responsible for maintaining accurate financial records, managing the month-end and year-end close processes, and ensuring strong financial controls and reporting.

Responsibilities:

  • Oversee the day-to-day accounting operations, including AP, AR, general ledger, payroll, and cash management
  • Manage and oversee the month-end and year-end close processes
  • Prepare and review monthly financial statements and management reports
  • Maintain the general ledger and ensure accurate account reconciliations
  • Oversee accounts payable and accounts receivable functions
  • Manage cash flow, banking relationships, and cash reconciliations
  • Develop and maintain strong accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls
  • Assist with the preparation and monitoring of the annual operating budget
  • Work closely with leadership on financial planning, forecasting, and reporting
  • Coordinate the annual audit and serve as a key point of contact with external auditors
  • Ensure compliance with applicable accounting standards, regulatory requirements, and nonprofit reporting requirements
  • Monitor restricted and unrestricted funds and ensure appropriate accounting and reporting
  • Oversee grant accounting and reporting, as applicable
  • Provide financial analysis and insight to organizational leadership
  • Supervise, mentor, and develop accounting staff
  • Identify opportunities to improve accounting processes, systems, and efficiencies
  • Support leadership with special projects and financial analysis as needed

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field
  • 7+ years of progressive accounting/finance experience
  • Previous Controller or senior accounting leadership experience
  • Nonprofit accounting experience strongly preferred
  • Strong knowledge of GAAP and financial reporting
  • Experience with audits, budgeting, and financial statement preparation
  • Experience with fund accounting and/or grant accounting is a plus
  • Strong Excel and accounting/ERP system skills
  • Excellent analytical, organizational, and communication skills
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities
