Tips for Shaking Your Job Interview Jitters

    By cfstaffingadmin | Interview Tips | Comments are Closed | 27 September, 2023 | 3

Job interviews can be nerve-wracking for even the most experienced professionals. The pressure to make a positive impression and showcase your skills can lead to anxiety and jitters. However, it’s important to remember that with the right mindset and preparation, you can conquer those interview nerves and perform at your best.

In this blog, we’ll share some valuable tips to help you shake off those job interview jitters and increase your chances of success.

    1. Prepare Thoroughly

One of the best ways to alleviate interview jitters is thorough preparation. Lisa Pantoja, Executive Recruiter in our New York office, says to research the company, its values, and the role you’re applying for extensively. You’ll be well prepared for the interview and stand out amongst the competition.

Additionally, it’s best to familiarize yourself with common interview questions and practice your responses. Bridget Sheerin, Director, Executive Recruiting in our Chicago office, says to ask meaningful questions throughout the interview process. Hiring managers will appreciate that you took the time to prepare, and you’ll feel more confident and in control during the interview.

    2. Dress the Part

Your appearance can greatly impact your self-confidence. Choose professional attire that makes you feel comfortable and confident. Ensure that your outfit is appropriate for the industry and fits the company culture. When you look good, you’ll feel good.

    3. Arrive Early

Running late to an interview can significantly increase your stress levels. Plan your journey in advance, allowing extra time for unexpected delays. Arriving early not only shows punctuality but also gives you a chance to relax, gather your thoughts, and mentally prepare for the interview. Use this time to review your notes.

    4. Practice Mindfulness and Relaxation Techniques

Mindfulness and relaxation techniques can work wonders in calming interview jitters. Before the interview, take a few moments to practice deep breathing or meditation. These techniques help slow down your heart rate and promote a sense of calm. Visualize yourself succeeding in the interview and focus on positive outcomes. Embracing a positive mindset will help you feel more confident and reduce any interview anxiety.

    5. Focus on the Conversation, Not Perfection

Many candidates feel pressured to provide perfect answers during an interview, which can increase nervousness. Instead, shift your focus to having a meaningful conversation with the interviewer. Listen actively, respond thoughtfully, and ask relevant questions. Remember, interviewers are often looking for a cultural fit and the ability to communicate effectively. By engaging in a genuine conversation, you’ll appear more natural and confident.

Madeline Patterson, Director, Executive Recruiting in our Boston office adds, “If you find yourself really liking the team and are excited about the possibility of working at that company, tell them! A candidate that is enthusiastic and clearly expresses their interest in working with a company could be just the tiebreaker needed if they are deciding between two different candidates.”

    6. Take Care of Yourself

Prioritize self-care in the days leading up to your interview. Get enough sleep, eat nutritious meals, and engage in physical activity. Taking care of your well-being can improve your overall mood and reduce stress levels. Avoid excessive caffeine or energy drinks that can contribute to anxiety. Instead, opt for herbal teas or water to stay hydrated and calm.

With the right mindset and preparation, you can overcome these nerves and present your best self during the interview. Remember to prepare thoroughly, dress appropriately, arrive early, practice mindfulness, and focus on having a genuine conversation. By incorporating these tips into your interview preparation, you’ll be well on your way to shaking off those jitters and increasing your chances of a successful interview.
