Accounting Manager
Location: Grand Rapids
Department: Finance / Accounting
Reports To: Controller / Finance Leader
Position Summary
The Accounting Manager is responsible for leading day-to-day accounting operations and ensuring the accuracy, integrity, and timeliness of financial reporting. This role oversees the general ledger, month-end close, tax compliance, and internal controls while supervising accounting staff and partnering cross-functionally with operations and leadership.
The ideal candidate brings strong technical accounting expertise, leadership experience, and a background in a manufacturing or distribution environment.
Key Responsibilities
Financial Reporting & Close Process

Lead and manage the month-end and year-end close process

Oversee preparation and review of journal entries, accruals, and account reconciliations

Ensure accuracy of the general ledger and sub-ledgers

Prepare internal financial statements and management reports

Support external audit requirements and coordinate audit schedules
Operational & Technical Accounting

Maintain complex account reconciliations and resolve discrepancies

Ensure compliance with income, sales, and property tax requirements

Support annual budgeting and quarterly forecasting processes

Partner with operations leadership to provide financial insights and analysis

Research accounting issues and implement corrective actions as needed
Leadership & Team Development

Supervise and develop accounting staff

Establish performance metrics and expectations for the team

Provide coaching, training, and ongoing development

Drive process improvements and workflow efficiencies
Internal Controls & Compliance

Maintain and strengthen internal controls
-
Assist in development and implementation of accounting policies and procedures

Ensure compliance with regulatory and company standards

Coordinate with HR on benefits-related financial responsibilities, including 401(k) oversight
Qualifications
Education & Experience
-
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field

5+ years of progressive accounting experience

Prior leadership or supervisory experience

Experience in a manufacturing or distribution environment preferred
Technical Skills

Strong understanding of GAAP and financial reporting

Experience with ERP systems

Proficient in Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Office Suite
