About the Role

We’re looking for a strategic, hands‑on Financial Controller to lead all financial operations and strengthen the financial foundation of a growing civil construction company. You’ll oversee the full accounting function, elevate financial reporting, and drive the financial discipline needed to support complex construction projects.

What You’ll Lead

Core Responsibilities of the Financial Controller

  • Oversee all accounting operations, including general ledger, AP/AR, payroll, and fixed assets.

  • Deliver accurate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements.

  • Manage job costing and project accounting to ensure precise tracking of project performance.

  • Build and maintain budgets, forecasts, and long‑range financial models.

  • Ensure compliance with GAAP, tax regulations, and construction‑specific accounting standards.

  • Lead cash flow management, including forecasting, working capital optimization, and banking relationships.

  • Strengthen internal controls and safeguard company assets.

  • Provide financial insights and recommendations to senior leadership.

  • Coordinate financial and insurance audits and resolve findings promptly.

Additional Responsibilities of the Financial Controller

  • Support bid pricing, contract reviews, and financial risk assessments.

  • Partner with project managers to analyze cost variances and improve project profitability.

  • Oversee insurance, bonding, and risk management activities.

  • Improve financial systems, reporting tools, and workflow efficiency.

  • Mentor and develop accounting team members.

  • Evaluate capital investments, equipment purchases, and financing options.

  • Monitor compliance with contractual financial obligations and reporting requirements.

What You Bring as the Financial Controller

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field (MBA/CPA preferred).

  • 7–10+ years of progressive accounting/finance experience, including 3–5 years in leadership.

  • Experience in civil or utility construction strongly preferred.

  • Expertise in job costing, percentage‑of‑completion accounting, and project‑based financial management.

  • Strong understanding of GAAP and construction‑specific accounting practices.

  • Experience with construction ERP systems (Viewpoint, Sage, or similar).

  • Advanced skills in financial modeling, forecasting, and data analysis (Excel or similar tools).

  • Proven leadership, communication, and team‑building abilities.

  • Ability to collaborate effectively with operations, project management, and executive leadership.

  • Accurate, timely financial reporting with minimal adjustments.

  • Strong cash flow performance, reduced DSO, and optimized working capital.
