Project Accountant Key Responsibilities

  • Manage the complete accounting lifecycle for multiple construction projects.
  • Set up new jobs within the accounting system, ensuring proper coding, budgets, and contract documentation.
  • The construction project accountant will review owner contracts for billing requirements, retainage, change order language, payment terms, and compliance obligations.
  • Prepare, review, and submit owner billings including:
    • Progress Billings
    • Time & Materials (T&M)
    • Cost Plus
    • Percentage of Completion
  • Prepare and manage pay applications in accordance with contractual requirements.
  • Prepare, review, and maintain Schedules of Values (SOVs) throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Maintain accurate Work-in-Progress (WIP) schedules, supporting month-end financial reporting and project forecasting.
  • Monitor project budgets and perform detailed job costing analysis to identify cost variances and profitability trends.
  • Review project costs, committed costs, subcontractor invoices, purchase orders, and change orders for accuracy.
  • Work closely with Project Managers to monitor project financial performance, forecast costs, and maximize profitability.

Project Accountant Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field preferred, NOT required
  • 3+ years of Construction Project Accounting experience within commercial construction or a related industry.
  • Demonstrated experience with: Lien Waivers , Pay Applications , Schedules of Values (SOVs), Work-in-Progress (WIP) Schedules, Job Costing , Job Setup, Complex Contract Review
  • Experience supporting multiple Project Managers simultaneously.
