Our nonprofit client is seeking an experienced Controller to oversee the organization’s accounting and financial operations. This is a hands-on leadership role responsible for maintaining accurate financial records, managing the month-end and year-end close processes, and ensuring strong financial controls and reporting.
Responsibilities:
- Oversee the day-to-day accounting operations, including AP, AR, general ledger, payroll, and cash management
- Manage and oversee the month-end and year-end close processes
- Prepare and review monthly financial statements and management reports
- Maintain the general ledger and ensure accurate account reconciliations
- Oversee accounts payable and accounts receivable functions
- Manage cash flow, banking relationships, and cash reconciliations
- Develop and maintain strong accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls
- Assist with the preparation and monitoring of the annual operating budget
- Work closely with leadership on financial planning, forecasting, and reporting
- Coordinate the annual audit and serve as a key point of contact with external auditors
- Ensure compliance with applicable accounting standards, regulatory requirements, and nonprofit reporting requirements
- Monitor restricted and unrestricted funds and ensure appropriate accounting and reporting
- Oversee grant accounting and reporting, as applicable
- Provide financial analysis and insight to organizational leadership
- Supervise, mentor, and develop accounting staff
- Identify opportunities to improve accounting processes, systems, and efficiencies
- Support leadership with special projects and financial analysis as needed
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field
- 7+ years of progressive accounting/finance experience
- Previous Controller or senior accounting leadership experience
- Nonprofit accounting experience strongly preferred
- Strong knowledge of GAAP and financial reporting
- Experience with audits, budgeting, and financial statement preparation
- Experience with fund accounting and/or grant accounting is a plus
- Strong Excel and accounting/ERP system skills
- Excellent analytical, organizational, and communication skills
- Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities
