Key Responsibilities of the Director of Accounts Payable

  • Provide operational leadership for the Accounts Payable function
  • Oversee high-volume invoice processing, payment operations, vendor management, and related AP activities
  • Lead and develop AP managers, supervisors, and accounting professionals
  • Establish clear responsibilities, performance expectations, and operating procedures across the AP team
  • Ensure vendor payments are processed accurately and according to established deadlines
  • Maintain and strengthen Accounts Payable policies, procedures, and internal controls
  • Establish and monitor AP KPIs, service levels, productivity metrics, and operational performance
  • Partner with Accounting, Finance, Treasury, Procurement, Supply Chain, and Operations to resolve payment and process issues
  • Lead automation, system enhancements, and workflow improvements across the procure-to-pay process
  • Oversee vendor escalations, payment discrepancies, and complex reconciliation issues
  • Support month-end and year-end close activities, reconciliations, audits, and financial reporting requirements
  • Identify and implement opportunities to improve the accuracy and efficiency of Accounts Payable operations

Qualifications for the Director of Accounts Payable

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field required
  • 7+ years of progressive Accounts Payable or shared services experience
  • 3+ years of significant leadership experience within a high-volume Accounts Payable environment
  • Demonstrated experience leading managers, supervisors, or accounting professionals
  • Strong knowledge of full-cycle Accounts Payable and procure-to-pay processes
  • Experience with vendor management, payment operations, reconciliations, and internal controls
  • Experience establishing or managing AP operational metrics and service levels
  • Experience working within a large, multi-entity organization strongly preferred
  • Healthcare, shared services, or another similarly complex operating environment is a plus
  • Strong ERP and financial systems experience
  • Experience implementing process improvements, automation, or system enhancements
  • Ability to work effectively across Accounting, Finance, Treasury, Procurement, Supply Chain, and Operations
  • Must be authorized to work in the United States without current or future sponsorship requirements
