Finance & Payroll Specialist

Location: Plymouth, MI
Compensation: $40,000 – $50,000
Schedule: Full-Time, Monday-Friday | 8:30 AM – 4:30 PM or 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM

Dress Code: Business casual (jeans permitted on Fridays)

The Finance & Payroll Specialist will play a key role in supporting the organization’s day-to-day accounting and payroll functions. This position is responsible for processing payroll, managing accounts payable and accounts receivable activities, assisting with grant and fund accounting, and supporting financial reporting and compliance efforts. The ideal candidate will have experience in payroll and accounting functions and be comfortable working in a nonprofit or grant-funded environment.

Responsibilities

Payroll Administration

  • Process biweekly payroll for fewer than 50 employees, including both hourly and salaried staff
  • Perform payroll-related reconciliations and ensure accurate benefit deductions
  • Manage payroll funding allocations across various programs and funding sources
  • Maintain payroll records, documentation, and compliance with applicable regulations

Accounts Payable & Accounts Receivable

  • Process approximately 30-50 invoices per week
  • Manage accounts payable, accounts receivable, deposits, expense reimbursements, and petty cash activity
  • Coordinate vendor payments and maintain accurate financial transaction records
  • Maintain supporting documentation and organized AP/AR records

Grant & Fund Accounting

  • Track grant expenditures and funding allocations
  • Allocate payroll expenses across multiple funding sources
  • Assist with ensuring compliance with grant requirements and restricted funding guidelines

Financial Reporting & Compliance

  • Perform account reconciliations and financial data entry
  • Assist with audits, reporting requirements, and nonprofit compliance activities
  • Support budgeting processes, internal controls, and overall financial operations alongside the Director of Finance

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements

  • 2-3+ years of experience in payroll and accounting functions
  • Experience with payroll processing, accounts payable, and accounts receivable
  • Exposure to nonprofit accounting or grant accounting, with a working understanding of grant funding and compliance requirements
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, particularly Excel

Preferred Qualifications

  • Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business, or a related field
  • Experience with MIP Fund Accounting (Abila MIP)
  • Prior experience working in a nonprofit organization
